Home and Work Fireplace Safety Tips

Most homes look and feel cozier when they have a fireplace, especially a workable one that the owners use on occasion. But even an attractive fixture of this type can be dangerous if it is not managed correctly or safely. If you have recently purchased a home that has a fireplace, find and read maintenance guidelines to make sure your fireplace continues to be a source of pleasure rather than pain.

When taking possession of your home, ask the previous owner about the condition of the fireplace. Find out whether it was used, and if so, how often. Inquire as to whether there were problems with the fireplace, and if the chimney ever needed or received any type of repairs. It also would be a good idea to ask if there had been any problems with a fire starting from the fireplace or if carbon monoxide levels were checked. Once you have this information, you will have a better idea of what needs to be done.

Get the chimney inspected. Even if the past owners confirmed that the fireplace was in good working order, an annual checkup is advisable to make sure the flue remains operational, and that creosote has not built up to dangerous levels. Besides, small animals like birds, squirrels, and bats can build nests in the chimney at any time, and severe weather can take an unexpected toll, so a yearly inspection is a good idea.

Learn how to start, maintain, and put out fireplace flames. Keep the necessary materials on hand, like kindling wood and a lighter. Do not burn just any kind of materials in the fireplace, as some, like aerosol containers, may explode while others may release toxic substances.

Keep the right equipment on hand. You will want to put up a screen to keep sparks from darting onto the floor or nearby furniture. A poker will let you stir the embers to check for embers. You will need a shovel and a small dustpan to remove ashes, as well as a bin for firewood. Don’t forget to keep a fire extinguisher on hand, and know how to use it. Teach family members what to do in case the flame should get out of control. Install a carbon monoxide detector and a smoke detector in the room to pick up early levels of problem fumes or smoke. Without the necessary items, you could run the risk of letting a fire spread into the room.

Never leave a fireplace flame unattended. Someone should stay in the room or be in and out frequently to monitor its burning. Otherwise, if a problem occurs, it could spread quickly without adequate supervision. Make sure the fire has burned out before leaving the house or going to bed. Don’t close the flue until the fire is completely out, or the house could fill with smoke or carbon monoxide.

A fire in your hearth is a beautiful sight, but it is important to learn how to tend it properly. Get the necessary guidelines and equipment before burning logs in your home fireplace.

Workplace Injuries and How to Avoid Them

Injuries that occur at work or that are work related are common in the workplace. Some professions such as construction, factories, or sports for example are more susceptible to staff members incurring an injury. Some injuries can also occur outside of the workplace but are still work related injuries. There are some injuries that occur more often than others. It is important to create a safe working environment to avoid serious injury or even death. Here are some common workplace injuries and how you can avoid them.

One of the most common injuries that happen at work are falls. Falls can occur on same level surfaces or falling to a lower level of the workplace. People can fall because they slip or trip as well. A lot of construction site injuries occur because a roofer may fall or someone can fall off a ladder. Other examples of falls are people slipping on pavements, falling down stairs, or slipping on a wet bathroom or kitchen floor. If an area is wet or slippery there should be signs to point out hazardous areas. Construction sites can prevent falls by using safety measures such as having a roofer secured by ropes and harnesses.

Another common injury that is similar to a fall is how your body reacts to slipping or tripping without falling. The reaction to preventing the fall can be just as harmful as falling sometimes. You can stub your toe, roll your ankle, or hurt your back while preventing a fall. Again, this can be avoided by properly indicating areas that are wet or slippery. Some falls and trips are unavoidable, but there should be first aid available at every workplace.

Another very common injury is overexertion. This is most common for jobs that require heavy lifting, moving, stacking/organizing, throwing, and other types of physical exertion. In 2008 this was reported as the most common type of workplace injury. Proper training for employees whose job requires a lot of activity can help to avoid overexertion. You can also avoid straining your back by wearing back support if you are doing some sort of heavy lifting.

A more serious injury that is common on constructions sites is being hit by a falling object or incurring an injury against an object. For example, tools or materials can fall from roofs or high levels on a building site. People can be struck by the falling objects and serious injuries can occur. Running into a door, wall, or another object can also cause injuries. Injuries that happen against an object can happen at any workplace, not just a construction site. To avoid these injuries, one should pay attention to their work space, especially if they work at a warehouse or construction site.

If you are injured from a work related duty, you may be eligible for worker’s compensation. Some injuries may require time off of work or going to a hospital or doctor which can become expensive. If you think you are eligible for a worker’s compensation claim, you can hire an attorney specialized in these type of cases to help you file your claim. Remember to be safe while at work and report all injuries.

How to Deal with a Workplace Injury

The law provides individuals who suffer injuries due to no fault of their own, the provision to seek and receive compensation through the machinery of the law. Such injuries suffered by an individual are called personal injuries. In legal terms, personal injuries can be of different types depending on the circumstances in which they occur and who or what was responsible for it. One such type are workplace injuries.

A workplace injury is one that occurs within the premises of the workplace and is caused by factors that are directly or indirectly related to the workplace. The workplace could be an office building, a factory or a warehouse, a house or a garage. Essentially it is the place where you are employed and carry out your duties. By law, your employers are bound to provide you with adequate information and resources (protective gear) to help you ensure your own safety. When they don’t do this, and in the process you are injured, the employers are liable to pay you monetary compensation. Workplace injuries could be any of the following:

personal injuries caused due to faulty equipment Personal injuries caused due to negligent safety standards Personal injuries caused due to occupational diseases Personal injuries caused due to lack of hygiene in the work place Personal injuries caused due to lack of cleanliness or orderliness Personal injuries caused due to lack of information and training

If you’ve suffered injuries at the workplace, the first thing to do (apart from getting yourself treatment) is to bring it to the notice of the health and safety department of the organization. Each organization will have such a department that reports accidents and provides employees with proper care and compensation. Filing a report and also, obtaining confirmation is vital. This department will also guide you along the process of obtaining compensation from the organization. This process will require medical reports certified by a doctor that provide details of the injury. Usually companies insist that their own doctor be used, so verify this before you begin. Preserve all medical reports and documents including bills.

NFPA 70e includes the entire range of electrical safety issues, including workplace safety related work practices, equipment maintenance and require of special equipment.

NFPA 70e provides information to help companies reduce and minimize the exposure to all widely recognized electrical and fire hazards for the safety of employees and reduce the death rate and injuries caused due to these hazards.

In order to minimize the effect of the arc flash hazards and increase the work place safety by performing arc flash hazards analysis to ensure workplace safety.

In order to ensure proper workplace safety as well that you are meeting NEC, OSHA, IEEE and NFPA 70e requirement make use of proper arc flash analysis and study software to increase the protection boundary against arc flash hazards.

Make use of lockout Tag-out training and procedure to ensure tools are de-energized or live components are isolated. Many companies also make use of arc flash labels that meet OSHA and NFPA 70e requirements to keep away employees from hazards.

NFPA 70E was originally developed at OSHA’s request to address electrical hazards in the workplace. OSHA bases its electrical safety requirements on the comprehensive information in NFPA 70E. Even though OSHA does not mandate compliance with NFPA 70E itself, it considers NFPA 70E to be an effective how-to manual for OSHA regulation compliance.

If security takes a back door, accidents happen often. It’s just a matter of time. If an accident happens, dirty, society, shaken by the accident, is forced to make a concerted effort to improve safety in the workplace. Unknowingly, the company will enjoy many advantages in the process. What does the creation of a workplace accident? Create eye-catching large quantities of industrial safety poster can be very effective.

For small companies to accident-free is a huge undertaking. Insurance is expensive. However, with many companies offer incentives to accident-free brings the premium costs. This in itself is a big advantage. But there’s more.

Usually the biggest concern for a small company, is the owner of productivity. With limited number of head counts, it is natural to try for an owner, the maximum squeeze-out from the work of machines and employees. It often takes priority over security.

Never mind the motto “Safety First is our priority,” which in many poster safety sign, production and survival actually the first priority. How can you wrong! Effective people and companies, the emphasis on “first things first”. Important things must never be the way to trivial pursuits. The next episode in May jolt you back to your senses:

A company struggling with its small business and try to drive their productivity with limited resources.

Then one of your employees was involved in a serious accident at work. She was hospitalized for a week and the place they worked at the end of Adjustors Insurance for further inspection and repair. It was an eye opener for the owner, and he decided that a thorough review was the safety of their business processes in order.

The first thing he did was to conduct an employee survey. The employees were asked to provide feedback on the work environment and pointed out areas where safety concerns existed. This gave them a useful way to help ensure that a similar accident would not happen again.

He would also ensure that continuous improvements were to be established to work and the 2-way communication can. So, when the survey was completed, was a memo to employees remember the fact that their reports on the security affect everyone at any time, most were welcome and appreciated.

Using the feedback obtained from the employee survey, he sat down with them to clarify what had basic safety training areas revisited. Some of the newer employees have not completed the mandatory training, and done the long-term employees, it was so long ago that they would certainly benefit from a review. So he set a schedule for training and underwent all the specific offer safety courses. It took some time but it was is time well spent.

Finally, the employee survey is pointed out that an employee safety incentive program could go a long way in preventing future events. The owner than the cost in comparison to the benefits and decided that the idea was worth a try. It began with a monthly incentive program to award small prizes or vouchers for employees’ practical ideas for improving safety at work said. Then he added a price for the workers, the accident-free for a certain period of time.

Some staff felt that they needed to memories that they create and work safety posters. With their limited resources they create download safety posters, that they by themselves with their own word-processor software and started it all over the workplace. After a while it was a competition for the most creative work safety poster idea and best artistic achievements health and safety posters. As the company was dealing with food, there was also a competition for food safety poster. There were also periodic pop quizzes on safety procedures rewarded with price.

This process of improving safety in the workplace has led to more than just a few injuries. The continued efforts of the staff and the owner of a team spirit. The workers found a new joy in working in a safe environment in which creativity was actually on the ad. The procedures have been simplified, communications were very good, and should receive a boost.

out that efforts to improve safety and has increased productivity and savings on insurance premiums, and everyone’s smiling all the time. Making creative workplace safety poster has become an important factor cheap for the company’s profitability.

Workplace Safety, Fire Protection and Prevention

Companies have the responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. The government agency tasked with managing the workplace safety rules and regulations is called the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). This government agency operates on a federal and state level, creating mandates and administering audits and reviews at a local level. Every business that employs workers falls under OSHA’s jurisdiction. In order to be proactive, many companies have workplace safety programs to identify safety risks or potential hazards and take active steps to mitigate these hazards to improve the work environment. Companies set goals to decrease workplace injuries and accidents and take active measures to improve safety conditions around their business. These safety programs often include hazardous materials handling, lock out tag out procedures, fire protection compliance and reducing risk factors which might cause injury.

Safety committees typically comprise of management and employees whose primary goal is to review incidents, accidents, near misses and potential hazards in the workplace. This takes place through internal audits and research of the latest safety guidelines issued by OSHA. Typically, safety committees recommend training for employees based on the work they do and the jobs they perform. The safety committee will review work areas to determine ways to do jobs easier and more safely. They might recommend personal protective gear for various jobs and review duties to establish work procedures to reduce risks. Managers train forklift drivers and employees who operate complex machinery to ensure employees know how to operate equipment in a safe manner. Safety committees also recommend locations for eye wash stations and MSDS cabinets. They establish protocols for fire protection and evacuation plans if the fire protection plan fails.

Workplace safety is imperative to be an employer of choice. From ergonomic improvements to office space to proper lifting techniques for warehouse personnel, every worker in the United States benefits from OSHA’s oversight of workplace safety. The working conditions of the past generations set the stage for employers to take proactive measures in creating a safety and healthy place for people to work. Working conditions in the past were abysmal. Ventilation and lighting was poor. People worked too many hours for not enough pay. Companies took advantage of people desperate for work. Employers took too few steps to rotate workers which lead to repetitive motion problems as people injured a specific part of their body by performing the same job day after day for their entire careers. Companies would ignore practical standards to save money and pad their profits. They would forgo improvements to machinery and facilities to the detriment of their employee base. Fires and explosions were the result of egregious errors in decisions by companies.

Today, working conditions have improved immensely. As more companies are run by corporations, working conditions improved to attract talent to jobs. As the workforce gained education, they required companies to provide them with working conditions. With technological improvements, mundane, repetitive jobs have become automated. Best practices in business have lead companies to cross train team members to add variety to the type of work an employee performs daily. Companies increase productivity and output through technology improvements which also created better working standards for the employees. As safety awareness programs have become more commonplace, employees are educated about how they can stay safe at work. Safety programs continue to teach fire protection, injury prevention, and safe work standards. It is also necessary for companies to keep employee safe to attract talented, motivated people to work with their company. Safety programs seek continuous improvement and have a voice to ensure employees have a safe, happy, healthy work environment every day.

Twelve Employee Newsletter Tips, Ideas, And Articles For Corporate Wellness And Health

Finding articles and content can be frustrating and anxiety provoking, especially if you have other things to do with your time. Have a formula to help you finesse’ this chore can help. I have been there! Here’s the ticket: Getting employee newsletter ideas and employee newsletter topics requires knowing what types or problems and issues affect your employees.

Keep the list of 12 newsletter topics shown below. Periodically, think “what is affecting the workforce right now.” Drop post-it notes in a box as ideas come to you. You can further divide each of the following issues into other problem sub-sets. Try to make about 6-7 sub-set categories under each main topic.

Here are the key subject areas that I have discovered most things fall under in the ten years that I have been writing employee newsletters for major corporations and small businesses. This list is “Dave Letterman Style”. Again, there are 12 topics in this list. Print or copy it for your use. Then google:

“editable employee newsletter articles“

to find royalty free sources for more employee newsletter articles

12. Workplace communication: conflict, personality issues, dealing with difficult people, attitude problems, issues, and “ulterior motives”, etc.

11. Worker productivity tips: time management, organization, setting priorities, procrastination, etc.

10. Family, home, and community issues: Consumer issues, teenager issues, family stress, marital and couples harmony, resolving conflicts, work-life balance, ADHD issues, etc.

9. Personal fitness and emotional wellness: Exercise tips, getting more energy, depression, emotional wellness, nutrition.

8. Personal effectiveness and goal achievement: planning your career, getting more done, planning for retirement, New Year resolutions, managing money.

7. Team building: Tips on better meetings, reducing conflict, improving communication, about cohesiveness, being a team player, etc.

6. Improving relationships with your supervisor: communication, knowing what your supervisor wants, completing assignments all the way, making an impression, how to “read between the lines”

5. Hot productivity and health topics: health issues in the news, ideas, and more

4. Stress management: ongoing tips, avoiding burnout, self-assessment, work-life balance, work-family balance, self-talk management.

3. Using the Employee Assistance Program (EAP): EAP education, confidentiality, what EAPs do, when to use your EAP. EAPs are powerful management tools that have extraordinary capability for reducing monstrous behavioral risks in the typical organization–but only if they are properly implemented.

2. Workplace safety tips and injury prevention: Avoiding short-cuts, injury prevention, thinking safety, building a culture of safety, more ways to think about safety

1. Customer service issues: attitudes, difficult customers, peak performance, staying positive, keeping customers happy, reducing your own stress.

It’s important to ensure that your employee newsletter makes mention of your company’s EAP or Employee Assistance Program. Your EAP is a huge risk management tool, not just an employee benefit per se. An employee newsletter can be a huge channel of referrals for it. And, let me just say, you never know when the potentially violent employee will self-refer.

If you have been assigned the grueling task of producing an employee newsletter monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly, you will eventually come to hate your job without having some tricks up your sleeve and the topics above will help you tremendously.

Another alternative of course is to google “newsletter articles employee newsletter” and there are a couple sources that will let you use royalty free articles.

Workplace Violence Training – “I Guess You Were Too Late For Them!”

This is about a conversation that I had with several of my clients – parents who bring their children to me for self defense training – about several catastrophic workplace violence attacks that occurred practically back-to-back. I’m sharing this story because it demonstrates what I call, “backwards thinking,” and how your beliefs about a thing can be the very thing that is preventing you from solving it.

This event centers around the unfortunate event that took place at a military post, where a doctor – an officer of the U.S. Army – killed and wounded several soldiers in a fit of rage. Then, the very next day, a gunman shot and killed or wounded several employees in Florida.

While several of my clients were standing around discussing these incidents, only hours after the Florida incident, another client was arriving at my academy. She overheard the words shooting and, not knowing that we were discussing the most recent Florida catastrophe, assumed that we were discussing the attack at the military post.

After being brought up to speed on the conversation, and the fact that there had been another attack, she wondered out loud how and why these things could be happening. I told her that I really didn’t care why, just that they were and that was the reason that I was offering training to companies in the area of self-protection and personal safety.

At hearing this, she blurted out, “Well, I guess you were too late for them, huh?” Without missing a beat, I turned to her quickly and said, “Absolutely not. THEY were too late for me!” This statement caused everyone to fall silent as I proceeded to share my reasoning behind, what sounded like a very blunt statement. I said, “I can do nothing to help anyone who doesn’t think they need me, or somebody like me in the first place.” “As long as everyone is living in denial, apathy, or ignorance, they are at risk.”

I then added the reality that, “I can’t just barge into a place and force this training on people. And, unfortunately it takes an attack to wake people up out of their delusions that ‘it won’t happen to them!’” And this is the truth. It’s not pretty. It doesn’t sound nice. And, it’s not supposed to. It’s the truth.

The nice sounding words that allowed the victims of these, and many other attacks that happen every day, are the ones that allow them to wait until the day it actually happens. These are the things that make us comfortable in our ignorance. But, they don’t make us safe.

Was I sorry that I said what I did to my poor client who was under the same backward thinking that many of those who have the decision-making powers to institute the workplace violence training in their company that could have saved the lives that were lost?

Absolutely not. No more sorry than I am to share the story and tell the world that I said it. Cold? Maybe. Heartless? Not on your life! Because that’s exactly what I’m talking about here. And, the very thing that you’re gambling with every day that you go without some kind of workplace violence defensive tactics or personal safety training in your company.

YOUR Life! With 17 to 20 people being killed every week, and another 33,000 being assaulted, robbed, beaten, raped, or otherwise attacked, it’s only a matter of time before the odds are against you. And, when that happens, I won’t be too late for you either. But, you WILL have been too late for me!

Does your company have a solid and complete workplace violence training program? Do you and your workers know what to do should the unthinkable happen and you come face-to-face with violence in the workplace? Or are you betting the lives and safety of everyone involved that there isn’t someone right now, inside or outside your company, planning an attack? Get the facts and stop making safety decisions based on denial, apathy, or ignorance. Read my new workplace violence report, “Attack-Proof Your Facility!” It’s available free at: http://www.wcinternational.com
